If your child has been referred to pediatric pelvic floor therapy, you may feel unsure about what to expect. At Aloha Integrative Therapy, we understand that new experiences—especially around sensitive health topics—can feel overwhelming for both kids and parents.

This post walks you through what happens during your child’s first pelvic health session and how we create a safe, supportive environment to help your child thrive.

Why Pelvic Health Matters for Kids

Pediatric pelvic floor therapy supports children experiencing:

  • Frequent urinary and fecal leaks/accidents during the day or night (i.e. bedwetting)
  • Constipation or painful bowel movements
  • Urgency or withholding behaviors
  • Abdominal or pelvic discomfort

These symptoms are more common than many realize—and they’re treatable with the right approach to your child’s unique pelvic health care needs.

Before the Appointment

Ahead of your visit, we will ask you to fill out a brief intake form covering:

  • Your child’s toileting habits
  • Dietary routines
  • Physical symptoms
  • Medical or developmental history

During the Session: What Really Happens?

Our sessions are gentle, non-invasive, and centered on play-based learning. We create a calming space to help your child feel comfortable and safe.

You can expect:

  • A warm welcome and child-friendly introduction to the space
  • A brief conversation with you (the parent/caregiver) to address concerns
  • Play-based observation using games, movement, or drawings
  • Posture, breathing, and core muscle check-ins through fun activities
  • Possible External Perineal Exam for children/teens who are comfortable and provide consent along with parent/caregiver/ chaperone who is present throughout the entire session, to assess pelvic floor muscle function (***no internal pelvic assessments are done with the pediatric population***)

We always explain everything in kid-friendly terms.

Education for Parents & Kids

Our therapists will provide:

  • Age-appropriate education for your child about how their body works
  • Simple explanations of bladder and bowel functions and pelvic floor function.
  • Tips for better daily habits like hydration, toileting schedules, and posture during toileting

After the Session: What Happens Next?

You’ll leave with:

  • A personalized home program (may include therapeutic exercises, integrating more  helpful toileting routines, and much more)
  • A better understanding of what your child is experiencing and how to support them along this journey
  • Confidence that you’re not alone—and that healing is possible

Follow-up sessions are typically recommended on a weekly or biweekly basis, depending on your child’s goals and progress.
